Overview
The UMD Green Revolving Fund was established in 2011 to invest in a wide variety of sustainable projects at UMD. Now, the Green Revolving Fund has been updated in alignment with the 2023 Climate Action Plan and campus’s commitment to reaching carbon neutrality by 2050 or earlier. Green Revolving Fund projects reduce greenhouse gas emissions, while also providing long-term financial benefits to the University of Minnesota Duluth through reduced operating costs. Project rebates are paid back into the fund 100% and help to fund future projects.
Goals
- Reduce campus energy consumption through efficiency, conservation, and/or infrastructure improvements
- Increase campus renewable energy production to provide campus with clean power
- Reduce campus operating costs
Who can apply?
Full Projects
Any UMD staff, faculty member, department or student may apply for project funding. Student applications require a faculty or departmental advisor. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis pending fund availability.
Ideas & Suggestions
The campus community is also encouraged to submit ideas or suggestions for projects that Facilities Management would implement using Green Revolving Fund dollars. This creates a new avenue for campus members to advance sustainability across the UMD campus & operations, without the pressure of project management!.
Review Criteria
Funding awards are based on how the projects meet the fund criteria and the current needs of the University. An application should meet the criteria below:
- Alignment with the goals of the 2023 Climate Action Plan (p.18-19)
- reduce energy demand
- ensure efficient energy delivery through district systems
- increase clean energy sources
- Has a clear plan, budget, and timeline for the project
- Projects payback their costs and/or provide savings to the University
Submit a Project or Idea
Project proposals, ideas, and suggestions can all be submitted through the Green Revolving Fund Application.
