Sustainability Committee

UMD Sustainability Committee

Provide faculty, staff, and student expertise to:

  • Facilitate continued incorporation of sustainability into UMD operations, education, outreach, and research activities
  • Guide efforts at UMD to meet commitments for climate protection and support implementation of the U of MN Board of Regents Sustainability and Energy Efficiency Policy (July 2004) and the UMD Strategic Plan (May 2011)
  • Advance opportunities for sustainability-related education, service, and research
  • Serve on work teams to support sustainability improvements at UMD
  • Promote sustainability inclusion in departmental and campus decision-making
  • Set/adjust campus goals around key initiatives including: waste, energy, re-use, food, water conservation & resources, etc.
  • Contribute to regular reports regarding campus sustainability efforts, programs
  • Develop metrics/expectations for curriculum development

Criteria for Involvement

Operations Committee 

  • Demonstrated support for campus sustainability goals
  • Experience partnering with or working in a campus operational role
  • Practice sustainability through management, education, or personal action in a concrete manner (ex. do more than just talk about sustainability, they take action).
  • Representative is willing to actively involve members of their unit in sustainability practices and education.
  • Terms are 2 years.

Education Committee

  • Have a background in sustainability (clearly understand definitions and pedagogy).
  • Practice sustainability through management, education, or personal action in a concrete manner (ex. do more than just talk about sustainability, they take action).
  • Teach or administer sustainability in some deliberate context
  • Representative is willing to actively involve members of their unit in sustainability practices and education.
  • Terms are 2 years.
